BREAKING NEWS: Joe Tiller Falls Asleep at Table Trying to Read Morning Paper Again

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN -- Sources have confirmed that at approximately 7:28 AM this morning, retiring Purdue football coach Joe Tiller collapsed at his breakfast table in West Lafayette, into what doctors are calling a "very brisk slumber". Tiller, 65, was reported to be in "good health and high spirits" only moments before the dreadful incident by his wife, Arnette, who observed him gingerly sipping a half a cup of decaffeinated coffee and leafing through the front section of the Lafayette Journal and Courier.

"He seemed perfectly fine to me," a frazzled Arnette remarked to reporters on the scene. "I went into the living room to answer the phone, and five minutes later, I came back and found him... like this."

Paramedics on the scene conducted a thorough examination on Tiller. His face was still pressed firmly against page three of the newspaper and his hand was still gripping the half-full mug of decaffeinated coffee. After observing the warm, expanding puddle of drool pooling over the advertisements in the right column of the Journal and Courier and his gentle, steady stream of snoring punctuated by occasional snorts and loud, wet lip-smacks, they diagnosed him as "asleep" and determined his condition to be "stable".

When asked if this scare would jeopardize the rest of the season, the doctor on scene was optimistic. "You'd be surprised how often I see this condition, particularly in people Joe [Tiller]'s age. About ninety percent of the time, the whole thing blows over within thirty minutes. After emerging from the condition, the recovery is very rapid, and he should be back to full speed within hours. The prognosis is very positive."

This hasn't been the first such health scare for Tiller. In fact, just yesterday, he collapsed in a strikingly similar incident, again at his breakfast table, and again fewer than five pages into that morning's Journal and Courier. Tiller was roused from his condition after only fifteen minutes, and reported that he was having a "lovely dream about reading the newspaper and then taking a nap."

A Brief Treatise on Jimmy Clausen's New Hairdo

Allright, we've all seen it. Somehow, deep under the radar, the golden boy at Notre Dame decided to grow a profoundly absurd new hairdo for all the world to see. Now before anyone gets hasty and mislabels the new 'do, it's important to get it straight that it is not a mullet. It clearly violates the "business in front, party in the back" ethos of the mullet, as it is "party everywhere". So, what do you call the new look for 2008?

Simple: hockey hair. The wild, stringy locks and flowing mane protruding from the helmet has been an iconic look in hockey for nearly 80 years, and has graced the domes of athletic legends like Dennis Potvin, Guy LaFleur, Brian Engblom, and yes, even The Great One Himself. So while people may laugh at his absurd hair, if you slap a Canadiens jersey and a handlebar mustache on him and change his name to Jacques Clauseneaux, it all looks perfectly natural.

The New Banner is Up!

Well, with the changing times and graduating players, I've decided to revamp the old banner. The theme is "Fightinamish and Friends" and the banner is styled in the manner of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club. It's kind of a tribute to all the personalities who have made these last two years so successful and hilarious.

Essentially, the banner is serving as the House Rock Built's hall of fame. Henceforth, then, if somebody does something awesome or notorious, they can earn their way into the pantheon of the banner. You'll notice that three recently-graduated players made it to the hall, and the House is proud to induct Darius Walker, Brady Quinn, and Jeff Samardzija into the inagural wall of fame class. All three of them had achievements during the career that had a great impact on the team and this website, and are worthy inductees.

If you're an avid reader, you'll probably recognize most of these characters, but if you're a bit confused, here's a handy reader's guide:

1. HR Pufnustuf. Pufnstuf gained immediate fame in college football when Mike Valenti demanded he be hired as Michigan State's defensive coordinator. There's a pretty good chance you've already heard Valenti's rant a thousand times, but you should fire it up one last time, for nostalgia's sake.

2. Darius Walker. Michigan, 2004. An unheralded freshman hops off the bench and singlehandedly propels the Irish to victory. He was small, he was slow, and at times I screamed terrible things about him, but he was the centerpiece to the Irish offense for three years and an invaluable asset. Shifty and tenacious, he fought for every yard, caught every pass that was thrown to him, and never ever fumbled the ball. An obvoius choice for the HRB's pantheon.

3. H. Mervin Longfellows. The notorious booster, he dreams of a simpler time when boosters lived by an unwritten code when they paid their players.

4. Papa John. Urban Meyer's identical twin.

5. Neil Diamond. It's a tradition at HRB to get naked and dance to Neil Diamond every time we get a new recruit.

6. Alec Baldwin. The single greatest living actor of all time. Period.

7. Jeff Samardzija

Crazy hair, crazy catches. Rotted on the bench for two years under Willingham and became a two-time All-American under Weis. I can't even count the number of times he blew my mind with electrifying catches, huge plays, and heroism.

8. All-Hairmerican Award. The highest honor bestowed by the House Rock Built. Each year, we compile the All-Hairmerican Team for the greatest hairdos in college football.

9. Anagramaticus. The wise prophet of college football. He rearranges letters to discover hidden truths.

10. Howard Schnellenberger. A badass mustache-sporter who earned the esteem of the House Rock Built for his voting tendencies. He occasionally submits pearls of wisdom to the House Rock Built. 11. Andy French. The patron saint of getting wrecked, calling football coaches, and screaming inappropriate things. The inspiration for the House Rock Built's Andy French Cup.

12. The Orgeron. The deranged, psychotic cajun from Ole Miss, he serves as a constant inspiration for House Rock Built insanity. He also writes his own blog called Every Day Should Be Lemsday.

13. Orvis P. Sexton. The House Rock Built's resident gonzo journalist. Wherever there's booze, recreational drugs, and a football game, you can expect to see him with his notepad and pen.

14. Wilford Brimley. The long-lost twin of Purdue coach Joe Tiller, he demands that you eat your damn oatmeal.

15. Dink. A tough-luck Notre Dame fan and co-star of the House Rock Built's official comic strip, Dink & Dunk.

16. Stanford Tree. The worst mascot in sports, and victim of a gangland shooting last year. Charlie Weis is still a person of interest.

17. Brady Quinn. Quinn took over a program in desperate shape and spent four years getting his bones crushed. He never backed down, he never complained, and at the end of his tenure, he had piloted Notre Dame into a new era of offensive prowess. He's the man.

18. Franz Kafka. A House Rock Built favorite. After Mike Kafka won the starting quarterback job at Northwestern, the jokes kind of wrote themselves. Also a lucrative merchandising target.

19. The Robot. Courtesy of Marco.

20. Dunk. The second half of the Dink & Dunk comedy team, a USC fan who is prone to getting ripped and discharging firearms indoors.

21. Touchdown Jesus. The icon of Notre Dame football. His influence is spreading.

22. Knute Rockne. The one and only, the guy this whole blog is named after and dedicated to. Loves his Akvavit.

23. Lou Holtz. The scrappy, diminutive coach with a lisp who made me fall in love with Notre Dame football.

24. Ara Parseghian. He stopped the rain. He won two national championships. Nuff said.

25. Frank Leahy. No Mt. Rushmore of Notre Dame football is complete without this man.

26. Rumple Minze. The liquor of the gods. The House Rock Built owns a super soaker full of this 100-proof peppermint schnapps that we spray fans with during our publicity events.

27. Sparks. Three words. Hooker Killing Fuel.

You Know You Miss The House Rock Built

The House Rock Built has been off the radar recently, and for that I gravely apologize. There are two main reasons for this. First, there's absolutely nothing to report on in these grim weeks of February. Second, chronic alcoholism. Third, Blogger has apparently locked down my site for some sort of anti-spamming campaign. Three! There are THREE reasons I haven't been able to post. First, the grim weeks of February, second, the alcoholism, third, the spam, and fourth, I've been too busy growing mutton chops. FOUR! There are FOUR reasons I haven't been able to post...

Allright, this is getting silly. Here are some pictures of mutton chops to satiate your blood lust. Mutton chops are glorious. Mine are still about a week away from reaching their true potential, but everyone knows the ladies go crazy for chops. My name is Rufus, and that is the Truth-us.

The House Rock Built's 2007 Offseason Prop Bet

Greetings, readers! Hopefully, you're shaking off your Super Bowl hangovers today as we officially begin the football offseason. While we have a few entertaining moments out on the horizon, like the crazy circus that is the mad dash to National Signing Day on Wednesday and preparations for your tailgate party for the Spring Game (Notre Dame's spring scrimmage is on April 21st, mark your calendars now), we're looking at, for the most part, a long, dreary, footballless existence for the next six months. Sigh.

However, this Super Bowl awoke me to a great way to pass time for football fans desperate for entertainment: the magic of prop bets. After cleaning up on taking the "under" on Billy Joel's National Anthem performance (he came in ten seconds under the line at 1:44) and subsequently losing my shirt on the coin flip (tails never fails my ass), there's nothing like a little gambling to help pass the time. While you might not find this prop bet on an online sportsbook like Bodog yet, I'm sure you can find somebody who can put you down for this killer action:

  • What Day Will Mike Bellotti's Mustache Return?

After propelling his Oregon Ducks to some halcyon days in the early 00's with his dignified 70's stache, Bellotti mysteriously shaved off his dustbuster and opted for the clean-shaven look. Just like that, the Ducks were shut out of a BCS bowl in '05 and suffered a humiliating loss in their undignified second-tier bowl, then proceeded to drop their last four games of '06, including a brutal bloodletting by BYU in Las Vegas while bedecked in state-of-the-art helmetry. Needless to say, the mojo needs to come back, and soon. And what better way than for Bellotti to ressurrect his trademark mustache?

    HRB's Pick: August 29th.

Any other suggestions, dear readers? Leave them in the comments.

Vote Early, Vote Often for College Football Blogger Awards

College football bloggers spend a frightening amount of time laboring over their online projects and, in doing so, almost certainly do it at the expense of alienating their employers, their loved ones, and that sink full of dirty dishes that each day becomes more and more overrun with botulism cultures. Nonetheless, they persevere and continue writing, almost entirely motivited by some slightly misguided altruism and a passionate dream to entertain, inform, and make jokes about mustaches and farts for their loyal readers who, ironically enough, alienate their employers and loved ones by spending an inordinate amount of time surfing the internet and laughing at jokes about mustaches and farts.

Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to set aside a week or so at the end of the season to be self-indulgent and hold a little awards ceremony to congratulate themselves on the hard work they are doing for free or the random pennies they get from Google Ads. The fine lads at Rocky Top Talk have set up and hosted the poigniantly un-snappily named "2006 College Football Blogger Awards". And while I would prefer a more endearing sobriquet for the award (like, say, the Bloggies or the CoFoBAs), I still value the concept. Furthermore, I think that the actual hardware should look a lot like the 2005 Fiesta Bowl Trophy, as you can see on your right here. Alas, I'm not the boss.

Anyway, the House has made the ballot for two of these lovely awards, so I thought I'd take a minute to plug my viability as a candidate... the people's candidate.

CFB Award Nominee: Best Podcast/AudioFirst up is a nomination for Friday Night Lites for Best Podcast/Audio Thingy. FNL was a really fun project to bring together bloggers and talk shop which, unfortunately, came derailed at the end of the season due to massive technological failure (long story short, I had to put down most of my machinery with a shotgun after it became self-aware and tried to kill me in my sleep).

If you want to get a smattering of FNL, you can listen to some sample episodes, like this one, where I interviewed Michigan bloggers, or this one, where I yapped with Jay from Blue-Gray Sky and Orson from EDSBS. And finally, although it wasn't on a normally-scheduled show, I think that Mike Valenti's timeless rant was a staple of the HRB's audio content, so it probably deserves another listening anyway.

CFB Award Nominee: Best Big East/Notre Dame BlogNext up is a nomination for Best Big East/Notre Dame Blog. While it's flattering to make it to the finalists, most right-minded readers (including myself) will be casting their lot with Blue Gray Sky, who are (in the words of my sidebar link to them) the "one and only warlords of Notre Dame football".

So get out there and stuff the box. It's an honor to get this recognition and I'd like to thank my loyal readers for their nominations in the initial poll. I'm hitting the campaign trail these next two weeks, so if you see a 79 Chevy Nova painted blue and gold blasting the Notre Dame fight song in your city, come on by and I'll squirt you in the mouth with a super soaker full of Rumpleminze!

Behold, the ultimate campaign weapon!

Four Awesome Things About TCU's Defensive Coordinator

So I'm watching the Poinsetta Bowl, wanna fight about it? Anyway, TCU is pretty much manhandling NIU, and most notably have completely shut down freak of nature Garrett Wolfe (who currently has 7 rushes for -3 yards). Lou Holtz talked a little bit about Dick Bumpas, the Defensive Coordinator at TCU, and I've decided he is one of the coolest people in college football. Here are four things that kick ass about Dick Bumpas.

  • His name is awesome. And vaguely suggestive.

  • He has an absolutely bitchin' mustache:

I call it "The Peg-Legged Drifter"

  • He used to coach for Notre Dame. He was the defensive line coach from 1990-1992, and tutored Chris Zorich.

  • Finally, his last name is "Bumpas". Just like the neighbors in A Christmas Story whose dogs terrorize the house.

    BUMPUSES!!!!!!

Love Your Friends? Prove it With Presents!

The House has been AWOL today due to very important and pressing issues (forearm stuck in a vending machine... again), but thanks to some friendly firefighters and the jaws of life, we're back in business. I've got some special projects that I'm going to try to get wrapped up by tomorrow, so keep your head on a swivel. In the meantime, have a look-see at the latest offering from the House Rock Built Shop, which commemorate our new favorite crusty college football coach and our grassroots campaign to give Boston College a coach truly worthy of their program's storied history. With the holiday season coming up, it's getting time to think about that gift to get the person who has everything. Remember, nothing says "I'm sorry I cheated on you with the cigarette girl from the Rusty Lizard" quite like some piping hot House Rock Built merch.

Howard Schnellenberger... On Recruiting

Howard Schnellenberger Says...

"Back in '82, there was this kid who lived on a farm in Kentucky that all the scouts said I had to see. So as I'm driving down his 2 mile long driveway, I come around a bend and see this big feller, buck nekkid, strangling a 2,000 pound bull with his bare hands. When I introduced myself to the kid, he bit my hand as hard as he could, tearing open a wound that would later take 14 stitches to close. I offered him a scholarship right then and there."

Howard Schnellenberger is Now Officially Cool

I've always had lots of respect for Howard Schnellenberger. First, Orson Swindle told me that Schnellenberger has the greatest mustache in college football, and dammit if he's not the authority on the subject. Second, he looks like he could be part of the Mandelbaum family from Seinfeld, as every time I look at this picture I get a visual of him hoisting something heavy over his head and throwing out his back while screaming "It's Go Time!" And if that wasn't enough reason to love the guy, check out his officially off-the-reservation final ballot in the USA Today poll.

Apparently, Les Miles did something unspeakable with Schnellenberger's wife, or maybe his granddaughter. The Bayou Bengals are an incredible #15 in his poll, stuffed behind powerhouses like Wake Forest and Rutgers, and five spots below Arkansas, despite having a better record and, you know, beating the ever-loving handsomeness out of them head-to-head. Oklahoma? #18. And sitting pretty at #8 in Schnellenberger's sheet? Your Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

That's right, old Howard has the Irish ranked seven spots above their Sugar Bowl opponent LSU Tigers. Looks like somebody has some confidence.

On a related note, it looks like confidence is staggeringly low for the Notre Dame fanbase going into the bowl season. It's hard to blame anyone though, as the team has folded like cheap lawn furniture against top-flight opponents this year, the defense is a porous travesty of arm-tackling dancing bears on mopeds, and the game is being played within a wad of smokeless tobacco's projectile range of the opponent's home field. In light of this, I am adopting Howard Schnellenberger as the official mascot of misguided, irrational, largely faith-based confidence. Every day from now until I get horribly bored of the idea, we'll take time to hear some (completely fictionalized) words of wisdom from big Howie. If it works properly, it will be just the booster shot of confidence this fanbase needs going into bowl season.

Howard Schnellenberger Says...

"Making love to a woman requires a gentle yet unflinchingly stern hand, much like coaching college football, breaking a wild stallion, or robbing a liquor store. Any before any of you candyasses chime in with your opinions, keep in mind that I've done all four of those more times than you've had hot meals."

Indisputable Evidence: Ride that Coaching Carousel

The mighty hammer of vengeance has fallen heavily this last week, cleanly cleaving inept, incompotent, and downright unbalanced head coaches from their jobs with voracious fury and nigh-indiscriminate bloodlust. As we enter the weeks of obsessive plane-watching, rumermongering, and of course the obligatory Gary Barnett withdrawing his name from consideration, it's important that we take a second to look back on those fallen coaches who are soon to be unemployed, dead in a bathtub, or, worse yet, locked in a studio with Bob Davie for hours.

Alas, we here at the House Rock Built thought it would be a fitting tribute to the washouts of the big show to gather them together, pretty them up, and have a bachelor auction for fired coaches, Indisputable Evidence style. So get your checkbooks ready, because it's time to meet our bachelors. Remember, all proceeds go to charity, so dig deep people. Let's have a look-see, shall we?

Back From Compton

Good to be back, ladies and gentlemen. I spent today in a medically-induced coma attempting to reset my internal clock after time zone changes, turkey naps, brown liquor benders, and football-induced post-traumatic stress. As your loyal Notre Dame blogger and witness-slash-active participant in this weekend's football game, I certainly do owe the readers my take on the game, the season, and the general standing of the team today. Alas, that's going to wait a couple days as my perspective begins to heal with further removal from the game in LA. Also, I have to call Enterprise and explain to them why I torched their rental car. Thank god for the damage waiver insurance.

For my instant analysis, you can scoot over to the fanhouse, where I pitch in my two cents and link up some more verbage on the game. If you're desperate for a soundbite, then how about this: USC is really, really, spooky good. When Pete Carroll can get his hands on gobs of defensive talent, he can do some frightening things that make you want to cry. This Irish 2006 squad is a big-hearted group, but ultimately you can't ignore that it's a patchwork job in terms of overall talent and depth on both sides of the ball. There's enough good coaching to make these deficiencies a non-issue against more middling barely-bowl-eligible opponents, but when it's time to dance with the big boys, it's a lot harder to hide what's flapping in the breeze.

Anyway, like I said, there's going to be some detailed analysis coming later this week, but also some fun stuff too. Alas, it's silly season, so we can step aside from our heated weekly battles and pay attention to the funny stuff that really makes college football great. Like, for example, comparing the hotness of the wives of recently-fired coaches. Sneak preview: John Bunting's better half, Dawn, wins some killer points for her ability to pound down beers like a filthy truck stop call girl.

She might not win in a beauty pagent, but she sure as shit could brain Shari Shula with an empty Bud bottle.

A Tribute to Karl's!

For the first time ever (fact checking? Who needs it? I've got a bunch of loudmouth readers who will give me the business within minutes if I'm wrong), Notre Dame welcomes a head coach named Karl to the House that Rock Built. While the wispy-thin personality-devoid Karl Dorrell is off to an admirable start, he's still got a long way to go if he's going to be make into the pantheon of "Greatest Karls of All Time". Here's a look at his competition:

Karl Childress

(a.k.a. "Sling Blade")
A slow-witted, lumbering sociopath with a strange voice and a disarmingly charming charisma about him, much like Karl Dorrell (except for the disarmingly charming charisma). Until Dorrell hacks a feller up with a kaiser blade to save a struggling child and his mother, we're going to have to give the nod to Billy Bob.
Advantage: Karl Childress

Karl Marx

(Father of Modern Socialism)
Brazen, outspoken, iconoclastic and idealistic. He wrote the rules on the new world order in a post-industrialist era, and probably could drink vodka with the best of them. Marx is the owner of one of the most recognizable beards in the modern era, whereas I'm pretty sure it would take Karl Dorrell ten years to grow sideburns and one of those cheezy chinstrap beards. Have to give the nod to Marx here.
Advantage: Karl Marx

Karl Malone

(Professional Wrestler and Mailman who did a stint in the NBA)
A Renaissance man if ever there was one. One day, he's a taciturn hard-working superhero on the basketball courts. The next day, a cheap-shotting public service announcement-giving zen master who drives an 18-wheeler in the offseason and will likely someday be elected governer of some backwater state. Karl Dorrell has a long way to go to fill these shoes.
Advantage: Karl Malone

Karl Hungus

(Nihilist, kidnapper, porn star, and frontman for the timeless nu-wave trio Autobahn)
Another jack-of-all-trades, this shaggy-haired German nihilist has built an impressive film career by starring in such epics as "Logjammin". His famous quotes "Miene dispatcher says there is problem mit deine kable" and "Ve believe in nothing!" are as true today as they were the day they were uttered. He'll make you forget about that farm in Kansas, that's for sure.
Advantage: Karl Hungus

Karl Rove

(Boy Genius, Political Mastermind, Space Emperor)
When he's not conquering the world, destroying his enemies, or generally making the world a better place, Rove spends his quiet personal hours stalking and terrorizing fellow Notre Dame blogger Marco. It's a tough choice between Dorrell and Rove, but I think the ultimate tiebreaker is who you'd rather have your daughter go out on a date with. My only concern is that Rove would very likely drive off in an unmarked black SUV and sell my daughter's organs on the Bangkok black market, whereas Dorrell would probably take her to a coffee shop and tell her boring stories about his cats. I think it's a no-brainer.
Advantage: Karl Dorrell

Well, there you have it. Keep in mind, a big-time road win in what could probably be argued as the biggest road trip of his career would do wonders for moving his way up this distinguished list. Here's hoping he doesn't.

Good to be back, kiddos. It looks like a lot of the names have changed since I've hung around, but it's clear to see that dreams have remained and they've turned around. Welcome back, blogger. Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.

And that's just three days of growth, ladies.

Right, onto more important things. Your boy spent the weekend carousing around the taverns and inns of Chicago and watching football on television in a drunken haze. Trusty commentator protonjockey hypothesized that my "bye week mini-vacation" was a cover story, and that I was actually in recovery for a liver transplant surgery. A worthy theory, but the idea of me and my raging drinking habits making it to the top of a transplant list is laughable. Nope, my only chance of getting a new liver is by kidnapping, drugging, and disfiguring a drifter again.

You're working like a dream, my trusty hobo kidney.

Right, so what was I talking about? Oh, yes, Blogpoll. I manage to unclench my death grip on Mr. Bold last week, passing the torch to a few other bloggers for the most wildly divergent poll. Methinks this week shall see a continued shift to the normative mean, as a lot of scores have been settled on the field. Here's a quick recap of my picks:

  • We've got ourselves a #1 and a #2. Don't really think there's much wiggle room here, those two dastardly Big Ten behemoths are clearing the way for a game of the century. Both have had some struggles, but neither has been in extreme jeopardy of dropping a game. As it's quickly being established that Wisconsin is the third best team in the conference, Michigan's workmanlike wrangling of the Badgers makes it pretty clear that there is a big drop-off between the big guns and the wannabes in the Big Ten.

    Plus, think of the marketing:

    vs.

  • I handled the recursive loss loop as best I could. USC - Arkansas - Auburn - Florida - Tennessee - Cal. Yikes. My only shortcut was putting Arkansas down near the bottom, but I think I can be justified by the strength of schedule and quality wins of the teams above them.

  • Texas, your schedule still sucks. Your climb up the rankings will be a steep and arduous one. Plus you were losing to Baylor, and not even the badass Baylor who managed the 1995 Colorado Rockies (greatest baseball team of all time, ever, period.). Just the crappy football Baylor.

Even this guy would go 4-0 against the four weakest teams in the state of Texas.

Well, there ya have it. Ballot is due on Wednesday morning, so give me a shout if you have any particularly strong objections.
